31 வாண்டுமாமாவின் கனவா? நிஜமா? தமிழின் முதன்மையான சித்திரக்கதை-VanduMama’s Kanava?Nijama?

தமிழின் மிகச்சிறந்த கதைசொல்லியாகிய திரு வாண்டுமாமா (என்று பலராலும் அழைக்கப்படும் திரு வி.கிருஷ்ண மூர்த்தி) அவர்களின் பிறந்தநாள் சித்திரை மாதம் ஐந்தாம் நாள் என்று தெள்ளத்தெளிவாக அவரது சுயசரிதையில் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டு இருந்தாலும் அவரைப்பற்றிய அதிகாரபூர்வமான தகவல் கையேடு இன்றுதான் அவரது பிறந்த நாள் என்று சொல்கிறது. இருக்கட்டும் - ஐயா, உங்களை வாழ்த்த வயதில்லை என்பதால் நன்றியுடன்  வணங்குகிறேன். நீங்கள்  வாழும்காலத்தில் வாழ்வதற்காகவே பெருமைப்படுகிறேன். திரு வாண்டுமாமா அவர்களுக்கு பிறந்தநாள் நல்வாழ்த்துக்கள் மற்றும் மரியாதை கலந்த வணக்கங்கள்.

வாண்டுமாமா (எ) திரு வி.கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி தமிழில் பல புனைப்பெயர்களில் எழுதி இருக்கிறார். கௌசிகன் என்ற பெயரே மிகவும் அறியப்படும் மற்றுமொரு பெயராக இருந்தாலும், இந்த மூன்று பெயர்களைத் தவிர (வாண்டுமாமா, கௌசிகன், வி.கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி) குறைந்தபட்சம் வேறு ஐந்து பெயர்களிலாவது எழுதி இருக்கிறார். ஒவ்வொரு பெயருக்கும் ஒரு சிறப்பான காரணம் உண்டு. சிறுவர்களுக்கான சித்திரக்கதைகளும், கதைகளும் எழுதும்போது வாண்டுமாமா என்ற பெயரிலும், இளைஞர்களுக்காக எழுதும்போது கௌசிகன் என்ற பெயரிலும் எழுதுவதை இவர் வழக்கமாக கொண்டிருந்தார். உதாரணமாக மூன்று மந்திரவாதிகள், சிலையை தேடி போன்ற சித்திரக்கதைகளை எழுதும்போது வாண்டுமாமா என்ற பெயரிலும், டையல் ஒன் நாட் நாட், அறிவின் விலை ஒரு கோடி போன்ற சித்திரக்கதைகளை எழுதும்போது கௌசிகன் என்ற பெயரிலுமே எழுதி இருப்பார். இன்று வரையிலும்கூட இதனை அறியாதவர்கள் பலர்.

என்னை சந்திக்க வரும் பல ரசிகர்கள் அடிக்கடி கேட்கும் கேள்வி இதுதான் - தமிழின் மிகச்சிறந்த காமிக்ஸ் கதை எது? கேள்வி என்னவோ மிகவும் சுலபமாக தென்பட்டாலும்கூட பதில் சொல்வது அத்துணை எளிதல்ல. தமிழின் மிகச்சிறந்த சினிமா எது? என்ற கேள்வி போலதான் இந்த கேள்வியும். நேரிடையான தமிழ் காமிக்ஸ் கதைகளா? அல்லது மொழிமாற்றம் செய்யப்பட்ட கதைகளா? இவைதான் சிறந்தது என்பதற்கு ஏதேனும் அளவுகோல் உள்ளதா? அப்படி அளவுகோல் இருந்தால் அதனை நிர்ணயித்தது யார்? நம்ம மெட்ராஸ் தாதா விமலாதித்த மாமல்லன் போல என்னால் இவை, இவை தான் காரணிகள் என்று கூறும் விருப்பம் இப்போதைக்கு இல்லை. பின்னொரு மழைக்கால மாலைநேர விவாதங்களுக்காக அவற்றை விலக்கி வைத்திருக்கிறேன். இப்போதைக்கு பலராலும் தமிழின் உண்மையான கிளாசிக் என்று பாராட்டப்படும் ஒரு சித்திரக்கதையை பற்றி இந்த பதிவில் விரிவாக விவாதிப்போம்.

சமீப காலங்களில் ஹாரர் / த்ரில்லர் ஜான்றே ரசிகர்களால் மிகவும் சிலாகிக்கப்பட்ட ஒரு படவரிசை பைனல் டெஸ்டிநேஷன் பட வரிசை ஆகும். இந்த பட வரிசையின் அடிப்படை கரு ஒன்றுதான்: நடக்கப்போகும் மோசமான நிகழ்வுகளை (விபத்து, கோர மரணம், இத்யாதி, இத்யாதி) முன்கூட்டியே தெரிந்துகொள்ளும் கதைநாயகன் அல்லது கதைநாயகி அவற்றை எப்படி தவிர்க்க முயல்கிறார்கள் என்பதே இந்த படங்களின் மையக்கரு. இப்படி முன்கூட்டியே நடக்கபோகும் நிகழ்வுகளை அறியும் திறனுக்கு ப்ரிமோனிஷன் என்று பெயரிட்டு அறிவியலார்கள் அழைப்பார்கள். விஞ்ஞானத்தால் அறிவுபூர்வமாக நிரூபிக்கப்படாத பல விஷயங்களில் இந்த ப்ரிமோனிஷனும் ஒன்று.

உண்மையிலேயே பேன்டசி கதை ரசிகர்களுக்கு இது போல ஒரு மையக்கரு கிடைத்தால் அதில் பின்னி பெடலெடுப்பார்கள். தமிழில் இதுபோல இலக்கியவியாதிகள் யாராவது எழுதி இருக்கிறார்களா என்பது தெரியவில்லை (கண்டிப்பாக தெரிந்து கொள்ள ஆசையுமில்லை). ஆனால் இரட்டை எழுத்தாளர்கள் சுபா அவர்களின் கதைகளில் ஷெர்லக் கமல்குமார் என்றொரு துப்பறியும் பாத்திரம் வரும் (இவருக்கென்றே பத்திற்கும் மேற்பட்ட கதைகள் எழுதப்பட்டதாக நினைவு). அந்த ஷெர்லக் கமல்குமார் (அறிவியல் அறிஞர்களால் மறுக்கப்படுகின்ற) எக்ஸ்ட்ரா சென்சரி பெர்சப்ஷன் என்ற ஒரு வித்தியாசமான ஆறாம் அறிவு கொண்ட ஒரு நபர். இவருக்கு சில விஷயங்கள் கோர்வையாக நினைவலைகள் போல தோன்றும். அதனை கொண்டு பல சிக்கலான கேஸ்களை துப்பறிவார். நான் மாத நாவல்களை படிப்பதை நிறுத்தி பதினைந்து ஆண்டுகள் ஆவதால் இப்போது இந்த வகையான கதைகள் வருகிறதா என்றும் தெரியாது.  ஆனால் அந்த காலகட்டங்களில் படிக்கும் ரசனையை தூண்டிய கதை அமைப்புகளில் இதுவும் ஒன்று.

தமிழில் வெளிவந்த காமிக்ஸ் கதைகளில் (நேரிடை மற்றும் மொழி மாற்றம்) இதுபோன்ற வித்தியாசமான கதை அமைப்பை கொண்ட கதைகளை விரல் விட்டே எண்ணி விடலாம். அவற்றில் தலை சிறந்த ஒரு கதையே வாண்டுமாமா அவர்களின் கனவா? நிஜமா?. இந்த கதை வெளிவந்து சரியாக முப்பத்தி இரண்டு வருடங்கள் ஆகிறது. சர்வதேச குழந்தைகள் ஆண்டாக அறிவிக்கப்பட்ட 1979ம் ஆண்டுதான் இந்த கதை துவங்கியது. வாண்டுமாமா அவர்களின் கதையமைப்பில் பல சித்திரக்கதைகள் வந்திருந்தாலும் ஓவியச் சக்கரவர்த்தி திரு செல்லம் அவர்களுடன் இணைந்து வெளியிட்ட கதைகள் பதினைந்திற்கும் குறைவே (இந்த இருவரின் அனைத்து படைப்புகளையும் விரைவில் தமிழ் காமிக்ஸ் உலகம் தளத்தில் காணலாம்). இந்த இருவரின் திறமையை பற்றி அறியாதவர்களுக்கு இந்த தகவல்: இந்த இருவரின் ஜோடியானது சச்சின்-கங்குலி ஜோடி போல, ஹெயின்ஸ்-கிரீனிட்ஜ் ஜோடி போல ஒரு புகழ்பெற்ற ஜோடி. இருவருமே தங்களது துறைகளில் சமகால அளவில் தலைசிறந்து விளங்கியவர்கள். இப்படி முதன்மையான இந்த இருவரின் ஜோடி ஒன்றாக இணைந்து பணி புரிந்தால் அதன் விளைவு எப்படி இருக்கும் என்பதற்கு இந்த கதையே ஒரு சாட்சி.

கதையை வெகு சுலபமாக சொல்லி விடலாம்: நீலன் என்ற ஒரு ஏழை ஆட்டிடையன் ஒரு நாள் மலையுச்சியில் ஒரு விசித்திர புகையை நுகர்ந்து மயக்கமுறும்போது வித்தியாசமான கனவொன்றை காண்கிறான். தன்னுடைய வீட்டில் வேறொருவன் குடியிருப்பதையும், தற்போதைய மன்னரும் அவரது சகோதரரும் கொல்லப்பட்டு, இன்றைய சேனாதிபதி மன்னராகி இருப்பதும், தளபதி ஒருவர் மட்டும் தப்பித்து இவர்களை எதிர்த்து போராடுவதும் அவனுடைய கனவில் வரும் முக்கிய சம்பவங்கள். இவை அனைத்துமே பத்து ஆண்டுகள் கழித்து நடைபெறப்போகும் சம்பவங்கள். மறுபடியும் மயக்கமுறும் நீலன் தன்னுடைய இன்றைய காலகட்டத்தில் திரும்பி இருப்பதை உணர்கிறான். அதாவது நிகழ் காலத்திற்கு.

என்ன செய்வதென்றே தெரியாத குழப்பமான மனநிலையில் இருக்கும் நீலன், பின்னர் தெளிவுருகிறான். தன்னுடைய வீட்டருகே தற்போது சிறிய  செடியாக இருப்பதே பத்தாண்டுகள் கழித்து தன்னுடைய கனவில் பெரிய மரமாகி இருப்பதை உணரும் அவன், அந்த செடியை வேரோடு பிடுங்கி விடுகிறான். தன்னுடைய இந்த செயலானது பின்னர் மரமாகப்போகும் அந்த செடியின் எதிர்காலத்தை மாற்றியது போல தன கனவில் கண்ட மற்ற நிகழ்வுகளையும் மாற்ற முடிவெடுக்கிறான். துணிந்து மன்னரிடம் செல்கிறான். ஆனால் அவனது வாதத்திற்கு எந்த விதமான ஆதாரமும் இல்லாத சூழலில் மன்னர் அவனை மனநலம் தவறியவன் என்றெண்ணி சிறையில் அடைக்க சொல்கிறார்.

சிறையில் இருக்கும் நீலனை மன்னரின் இளைய சகோதரன் சேனாதிபதியுடன் வந்து சந்தித்திக்கிறார். பத்து வருடங்கள் கழித்து இதே சேனாதிபதிதான் நீலனை காப்பாற்றுவது என்பதால் நீலனுக்கு அவரை தெரிகிறது. சேனாதிபதி அவர்களின் உடலில் இருக்கும் (வெளி ஆட்கள்  யாருக்கும் தெரியாத) அடையாளம் ஒன்றை சொல்லும் நீலன் அவர்கள் இருவரின் நம்பிக்கையை பெறுகிறான். நீலனின் கூற்றில் இம்மியளவும் உண்மை இருந்தால் தங்களின் உயிருக்கு ஆபத்தேற்படுவதோடில்லாமல் நாட்டின் எதிர்காலமே சீர்குலையும் அபாயம் இருப்பதை அவ்விருவரும் உணர்கின்றனர். மன்னரின் சகோதரர் நீலனை கோட்டையின் அகழியில் தள்ளிவிட்டு விட்டு தப்பித்து சென்று இந்த நாட்டின் எதிர்காலத்தை காப்பாற்று என்று சொல்வதுடன் முதல் பாகம் முடிவடைகிறது.

நீலன் என்னவானான்? அவனால் அகழியை உயிருடன் கடக்க முடிந்ததா? தளபதியின் திட்டங்கள் நடந்தேறியதா? மன்னர் கொல்லப்பட்டாரா?  அல்லது நீலன் தன்னுடைய திட்டப்படி இந்த நிகழ்வுகளை நிறுத்தினானா ? எவ்வாறு இது நடக்கும்? ஒரு நாட்டின் எதிர்காலத்தை ஒரே ஒரு தனி நபரால் மாற்ற இயலுமா? என்று பல கேள்விகளுக்கு விடையளிக்கும் வகையில் இரண்டாம் பாகத்தில் பல விறுவிறுப்பான சம்பவங்கள் நடந்தேறுகின்றன. விறுவிறுப்பான கதையுடன் உயிரோட்டம் நிறைந்த சித்திரங்கள் கொண்ட இந்த தொடர் கல்கி வார இதழில் தொடராக வந்தபோது மிகுந்த வரவேற்ப்பை பெற்றிருந்தது.

இந்த கதையை படித்து முடித்த பின்பு எனக்கொரு சந்தேகம் எழுந்தது. பின்னர் நடக்கப்போகும் சம்பவங்களை முன்கூட்டியே தெரிந்துகொள்வதே ப்ரிமோனிஷன். ஆனால் இந்த கதையிலும் சரி, பைனல் டெஸ்டிநேஷன் பட வரிசை படங்களிலும் சரி, கதை நாயகர்கள் பின்னர் நடக்கப்போவதை முன்கூட்டியே தெரிந்து கொண்டவுடன் அவற்றை மாற்றி விடுகிறார்கள். சரி, ஒக்கே அதில்என்னப்பா பிரச்சினை? என்றுதானே கேட்கிறீர்கள். அப்படி மாற்றியவுடன் அந்த சம்பவங்கள் எப்படி பின்னர் நடக்கபோபவை ஆகும்? அதாவது நீலன் கனவில் மன்னர் கொல்லப்படுவது என்று ஒரு சம்பவம் பதிவாகிறது. இது ஒரு சம்பவத்தை முன்கூட்டியே அறிந்து கொள்வது. ஆனால் நீலன் கதையின் முடிவில் தன்னுடைய சமயோசித திறனால் அந்த சம்பவங்கள் நிகழாமல் தவிர்த்து விடுகிறான். அப்படி இருக்க அவனுக்கு வந்தது வெறும் கனவே தவிர பின்னர் நடக்கப்போகும் சம்பவங்கள் அல்ல. லாஜிக் சரிதானே? அந்த தொடரின் வெளியீட்டு விவரங்கள் பின்வருமாறு:

இந்த அட்டவணையில் இருக்கும் தேதிகள் அனைத்துமே கைவரப்பெற்ற தகவல்களே. என்னிடம் இந்த தொடர்கதை இருந்தாலும் முழு புத்தகமாக (முழு இதழ் கல்கியும்) இல்லை. வெறும் இந்த தொடர்கதை மட்டுமே முழுமையாக இருக்கின்றது. ஆகையால் இந்த தேதிகள் அனைத்தும் வேறு தகவல்களை மைய்யமாக கொண்டு சேகரிக்கப்பட்டவை. சிறிய மாற்றங்கள் இருக்க வாய்ப்புண்டு.

கல்கியில் / கோகுலத்தில் வெளியான வாண்டுமாமா அவர்களின் பல தொடர்கள் பின்னாளில் புத்தகமாக ஒரே தொகுப்பில் வெளியிடப்பட்டன. அனைவருக்கும் தெரிந்த ஒரு வெளியீடு பார்வதி சித்திரக்கதைகள் ஆகும். ஆனால் பார்வதி சித்திரக்கதைகள் வெளிவருவதற்கு எட்டு ஆண்டுகள் முன்பே (1985) இவை தொகுக்கப்பட்டு ஒரு தனி இதழில் காமிக்ஸ் கதையாக வெளியானது பலருக்கும் தெரியாத ஒரு விஷயமாகும். சென்னையில் இருந்து வெளியான செந்தூர் பதிப்பகத்தார்தான் முதன்முதலில் வாண்டுமாமா அவர்களின் சித்திர தொடர்கதைகளை தொகுத்து ஒரே வெளியீடாக பதிப்பித்தனர். பின்னரே பார்வதி சித்திரக்கதைகள் தொடரில் இது வெளிவந்தது. இதோ அந்த இதழ்களின் அட்டைப்படங்கள் (கனவா நிஜமா என்ற தொடர்கதை தான் மாயாபுரி என்ற பெயரில் வெளியானது). முதல் அட்டைப்படத்தை வரைந்தவர் ஓவியச்சக்கரவர்த்தி திரு செல்லம் (எ) செல்லப்பன் அவர்கள். இரண்டாவது படத்தை வரைந்தவர் நம் மனங்கவர் ஓவியர் திரு அரஸ் அவர்கள்.

கல்கி இதழில் பெரிய அளவில் வெளியான அதே படங்களை பார்வதி சித்திரக்கதை தொடரில் சிறிய அளவில் வெளியிட்டனர். அளவு மாறியபோது வேறு சில மாற்றங்களும் நடந்தேறின. முன்னுரையில் இரண்டு வரிகள் எடிட் செய்யப்படுகின்றன. படங்களில் அந்த கூர்மை (Sharpness) குறைகிறது. அதே சமயம் விலையை கட்டுப்பாட்டில் வைக்கவேண்டி பார்வதி சித்திரக்கதைகள் உயர்தர அச்சுத்தாளில் இல்லாமல் சாதரணமான தாளிலேயே அச்சிடப்பட்டது. அதனால் படங்களில் அந்த தெளிவு குறைந்து இருந்தது.

இந்த கதையில் இருந்துதான் செல்லம் அவர்கள் ஸ்டிப்ளிங்  என்கிற ஒரு தனி ஷேடிங் (புள்ளிகளை மட்டுமே கொண்டு நிழலூட்டும் பாணி) முறையை ஆரம்பித்து இருப்பார். இதற்க்கு முன்னரும்கூட அவரின் படங்களில் இந்த ஸ்டிப்ளிங் பாணியை உபயோகித்து இருந்தாலும் முதன்முறையாக முழு கதையிலும் இந்த ஸ்டிப்ளிங் ஷேடிங் முறை திறமையாக உபயோகப்படுத்தப்பட்டு இருப்பது இந்த கதையில் இருந்தே. முழு வண்ணங்களில் வரைவதில் பல ‘பிளஸ்’கள் இருந்தாலும் தமிழ் வார இதழ்களுக்கு முழு வண்ணத்தில் காமிக்ஸ் பக்கங்களை வெளியிடுவது மிகவும் குறைவே. ஆகையால் பெரும்பான்மையான சித்திரக்கதை தொடர்கள் கருப்பு வெள்ளையிலேயே இருக்கும். அந்த கருப்பு வெள்ளையிலேயே இந்த ஸ்டிப்ளிங் ஷேடிங் முறையை உபயோகப்படுத்தி வித்தியாசத்தை காட்டி இருப்பார் செல்லம் அவர்கள். கைரோஸ்கியூரோ என்ற ஒரு சித்திர வழக்கத்தைபோலவே செல்லம் அவர்களும் இந்த ஸ்டிப்ளிங் ஷேடிங் முறையை அற்புதமாக உபயோகப்படுத்தி இருப்பார்கள். தமிழில் எழுபதுகளில் பொன்னி காமிக்ஸில் வி.சந்திரன் என்ற ஓவியர் ஹாட்சிங் மற்றும் க்ராஸ் ஹாட்சிங் ஷேடிங் முறையை மிகவும் திறம்பட உபயோகப் படுத்தி இருப்பார். அவருக்கு பிறகு தமிழில் செல்லம் அவர்களே இந்த யுத்தியை முறையாக கருப்பு வெள்ளை சித்திரங்களில் சிறப்பாக வெளிப்படுத்தி இருப்பார்.

தமிழில் க்ராஸ் ஹாட்சிங் ஓவிய பாணியை பிரதானமாக கொண்டு வந்த கதைகளில் சிறப்பானது முத்து காமிக்ஸில் வெளிவந்த மஞ்சள் பூ மர்மம் மற்றும் தலை கேட்ட தங்க புதையல் ஆகிய இரண்டு கதைகளே. இந்த இரண்டு கதைகளுக்கும் ஓவியம் வரைந்தவர் பாவ்லோ மொன்டெக்கி என்ற ஓவியர் ஆவார். ஒரு சாம்பிளுக்கு இந்த படங்களை பாருங்கள். வெறும் கோடுகளை மட்டுமே இந்த அளவுக்கு நேர்த்தியாக உபயோகப்படுத்த முடியுமா என்று வியக்க வைத்திருப்பார்.

தமிழில் வெளிவரும்/வெளிவந்த/வெளிவரப்போகிற காமிக்ஸ் கதைகளில் இருக்கும் ஒரு முக்கிய பிரச்சினை அச்சிடப்படும் தாளின் தரமும், அச்சு முறையும். உதாரணமாக இந்த இரண்டு படங்களை பாருங்கள். முதல் படமானது சுமார் 32 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு கல்கி இதழில் வெளிவந்த ஒரிஜினல் படம். இந்த படம் வெளிவந்த தாளின் தரமும் நன்றாகவே இருந்தது. ஆகையால் படத்தில் ஸ்டிப்ளிங் ஷேடிங் முறை திறமையாக வெளிப்படுகிறது. ஆனால் இரண்டாவதாக இருக்கும் படத்தில் அந்த அளவிற்கு தெளிவாக தெரியவில்லை. காரணங்கள் பல. முதல் காரணம் ரீப்ரின்ட் செய்யப்படுவதற்கு அந்த ஒரிஜினல் நல்ல முறையில் பேணி, பாதுகாக்கப்பட்டு இருத்தல் அவசியம். ஒரிஜினல் இருந்தாதானே டுப்ளிகேட் செய்ய இயலும்? இங்கு ஒரிஜினல் நல்ல முறையில் உபயோகப்படுத்தப்படவில்லை. இரண்டாவது காரணம் அச்சிடப்படும் தாளின் தரம். நல்ல உயர்தர வெள்ளைத் தாளில் அச்சிடப்படும் படங்கள் சிறப்பாக தெளிவாக இருக்கும். தரம் குறைந்த தாளில் வெறும் படங்கள் இப்படித்தான் சற்று குறைந்த தரத்தில் வெளிவரும். மூன்றாவது அசச்சு தரம். இதைப்பற்றி பின்பொரு பதிவில் விரிவாக அலசுவோம்.

54 News 19: Tom & Jerry’s 70th Anniversary Special – Kungumam Tamil Weekly, Thirukural & Dr Prakash in Limelight

Very recently when yours truly was surfing through various channels, one particular announcement got the attention and that was from Cartoon Network, India. The Announcement was about the 70th Anniversary of the celebrated duo. Cartoon Network has decided to name April 1st as “Tom & Jerry Day” and hence they were promoting their primary show.

When TCU has posted a News Post on this (News 18), There was a talk on doing a full length, detailed post on this show which was the first ever cartoon show that TCU saw. Circa 1986. Hyderabad. Yours Truly was a much smaller kid than he is now and used to get up early and get dressed properly and visit “Anni Didi”s Home. (Just Now asked the long pending question to my Mother-How come someone with a Name Noorjahan can be called as Anni?). You know for what? The Sunday morning 7.45 TJ Show in the public broadcaster DD-1. As a kid, Yours truly used to love the TJ Show and the love story continues even now. No wonder, in the year 2000, the TIME Magazine named this as one of the Greatest ever television shows ever.

Last year, TCU has posted a memorable post on Sporty-விச்சு கிச்சு. Continuing on the tradition, here is a post on another memorable pair of characters: Tom and Jerry. To start with, here are some more news about the 70th anniversary celebrations of the dynamic duo in the magazines:

Most of the best things in the world are customised to the local taste and TJ Show is also no exception for this law. Here is the Indianised version of the TJ Show. 50 Review O-13: Pongal Special–Rani Comics No 14–Visithira Vimanam–Fleetway Princess Picture Library

Happy pongal (பொங்கல்) wishes to one and all. For those who are specific to tradition, Happy Thiruvalluvar day wishes. And, no – this has nothing to do with the conversation TCU had with Ayyampalayam Venki sir.

Pongal has always been one of the most liked festivals for yours truly. The reason is quite obvious – Among  all the other festivals, this one has more holidays. Yes, unlike diwali and other major functions-which have only one day as holiday- Pongal has a minimum of 3 to 4 holidays and No wonder, kids liked it very much.

When you have so much of holidays, you always tend to read more. No, not the text books. TCU is talking about the most loved ones - comics. So, this particular post is dedicated to one such comics which i loved the most when i was a kid. Dr 7 has already done a post on the pongal special issues and TCU is going to review one such book from that list. Yes, yours truly is going to review a Rani comics issue only in the 2nd time in the history of TCU. The 1st one being the post on Davy Crockett. Don’t ever forget that Muthu Comics was launched on one such pongal day only.

 

The issue that we are going to review in this post is that of Pongal special 1985 from Rani comics. Here are the details of that issue:

Although TCU has not read this book as a brand new one fresh from the store, Comirades who have done so informed that the advertisement about this story itself generated so much of enthusiasm as this is one of the very few stories which were directly linked to kids. Yes, in the early days of Rani comics, most of the stories were of 007 James Bond and wild west adventures. The only exception was that of issue no 4, which may be featured very soon in TCU with the original story in full colour.

The advertisement in the previous issue itself ignited the spark and people were waiting anxiously to read this story. An insider from the publishing house informed TCU that this is actually the 1st issue which was made available 2 days in advance from the original date. That is, though the date of publishing is 15th Jan 1985, this particular book was in shops on 13th Jan 1985 itself. This was to cash in on the pongal seasonal sales. The cover artwork was stunning to say the least. Unconfirmed news from the publishing house informs TCU that the cover artwork is done by in house artist Vel.

Julie lives with her family and uncle Lionel in lower  poppleton. Her uncle is an inventor turned detective. The 1st adventure in this story is triggered by an information received via wireless radio and they capture the petty thief using the flying wings and helps the local Policeman Mims by crediting that capture. Later on, Lionel's robot dog scares away the postman who drops one letter accidentally which has hidden information about a huge plan to rob in their small village.

Major Ulysses visits Lionel’s Office to invite Lionel to Model for his own Wax work statue. (Does this ring any similarity to another one of the Fleetway special story –Published in Aug 1967-where the villain visits the hero to make his statue?). Robot Dog barks at Major and Julie also suspects at him. Later on, Lionel invents robot policemen to help Mims to control city traffic. Major captures Lionel and Julie and then uses their robot police squad to steal from city hall. Chief of Police visits Mims’ home for further investigation.

Mims thinks that another one of the robot police squad is visiting him and throws water at his superior. Chief of Police gets mad ad Mims and warns that if he doesn’t capture the thief, he will recommend for the retirement of Mims. Lionel & Julie then travel on air using their new invention for an aerial survey and when they near Brigadier Burns’ Home, he assumes them as thieves and shoots at them. The robot dog jumps in front of the Shell and sacrifices for the maker. Later on, they unsettle Major Ulysses from the nearby tree.Figuring out that this duo is a threat to his plan, Major captures them and shuts them up in another on of Lionel’s strange inventions.

After this, Major takes out his gang to the Hall where Burns’ is showcasing his traditional antiques. Before Major could do anything, our dynamic duo arrives at the scene via their strange looking Plane which can travel under ground. Sensing that he can’t run, Major takes out Lionel and Julie at gunpoint and commands them to drive their strange vehicle to his hideout. However, Lionel drives it to Scotland Yard Head quarters where major is duly captured and Mims is promoted in the end.

Overall, this was one of those stories which you would have loved, if you happen to read it in your early teens. So, it was no wonder that it was a sell out in the 1st print run and it is a collectors delight to have this issue. Another amazing thing about Rani comics was, that it never increased their cover price even for special editions. However, these special editions will be having another additional 16 pages. They used to advertise this stating that increase in pages, price remains the same. The fillers in the book are picture puzzles. Try out your luck.  

Another constant feature about Rani comics was, that of the Readers comments and the prize winning review of the previous month’s issue. The issue discussed was a fleetway wild west story.Here are they along with the mandatory state lottery advertisement. My brother always used to ask this question whenever he saw this Ad – Are they implying that ONLY Monkeys buy lottery? well, the answer to that question is the way you look at life.

The regular review prize announcement for the best review was INR 50/-, which was a huge amount in those days-considering that the annual subscription itself was INR 36/-. The editor had one point in his mind and unfortunately none of the readers could echo his POV and he mentions that here in the review page. Kindly read the readers comments and you will always find that the set of readers from Prakash publishers were entirely different from that of Rani Comics.

As usual, TCU has the book which was published in UK. It seems that Lionel and Julie were part of a series which was running for quite some time and the advertisement on the back wrapper suggests that the series continues from hereon. The best part of the translation of Ramajayam was that, he never deviates from the main theme and hence it is always a pleasure to read the story in one’s mother tongue – Tamil, as in the case of yours truly.

Another surprise in this book was that of the mini adventure by 007 – James Bond. Yes, and here they have produced the 1st insignificant part of Doom Crack as a one part adventure and here is a trivia for all those fans – How many times 007 appears in such mini adventures in Rani comics? The other regular Trivia question about the artist remains as well. Which was the only 007 strip drawn by the much acclaimed MAD artist Harry north? Well, the answer is right in front of your eyes. The regular thriller series by Chitra Manalaan was also on in this issue.Readers by now would have understood that as long as Ramajayam was there, Chitra Manalan will be writing stories in Rani comics.

The actual Doom crack was published later on in the month of march and in those days, it was one of the 007 Strips which was disliked by almost all of my friends as it was UnBondlike in many ways.The same story was later on reprinted in Rani comics in full colour with a different translation and newer title. Discussing on this topic will deviate from the title – Pongal special- and hence we shall deal with harry north later on.
