15 TCU Presents . . . 08: Tinkle Star – Tamil Comics Magazine

Dear ComiRades,

Welcome Back. It’s been very, very long time since we introduced Tamil Comics & Graphic Novels related to Tamil. So, we take this opportunity to revive this series with the wonderful news that the 2nd volume of the Tinkle Star is out on stands from Yesterday onwards, Officially.

For those who came in late, Tinkle Magazine is spreading its wings in regional languages and that precisely is the reason behind the launch of 2 regional language editions, Hindi and Tamil. Though these magazines were launched in December itself, the respective second issues were made available yesterday only. Let us get into the post with some sample images and details.

Tinkle Star 01: Dec 2014

Through Friends (Distributors, Translators etc) we were informed in November itself that Tinkle is coming out with a Tamil Magazine. So, the eagerness to see the issue was increasing day by day and on the 1st of Dec 2014, we saw the 1st ever issue of Tinkle in Tamil. It was priced as INR 25/- and for a 80 Multi colour Page book, it was a steal. The size was also so compact that TCU liked the format and design of the book instantly.

TCU was informed that there was an Advertisement proclaiming the launch of Tinkle Stars was placed in The Hindu News paper. Unfortunately yours truly couldn’t find the one & was still wondering how it was informed to the readers.

Of course there were some constraints and issues with respect to Translation and printing (and let’s talk about that in the later part of the post), the issue was more closer to the one for which we were yearning for so long. Here is the editorial of the first issue:

The Book was stacked with comics stories and they were categorised into three segments:

• Tinkle Stars (Suppandi, Shikari Shambu, Kalia The Crow, Tantri the Mantri, Pyare Lal etc)
• Tinkle Stories (Folk Tales, regional submissions from readers, award winning stories etc)
• Filler Segment (Spot the differences, Tinkle Q & A, Do it Yourself)

Tinkle Stars 02: March 2015

After the launch of the first issue, there was not much of communication from the publisher. In certain important shops in Chennai, these books were made available only from Christmas onwards, thereby hampering the possibility of making some noise. Even in the much sought after Annual extravaganza called Chennai Book Fair, the visibility of the Tamil variant was minimal, to say the least.

Even after that, there was not much information. Though TCU has learnt that the second issue will be irrespective of the sales outcome of the same. Because even while printing the first issue, the second one was also printed. It was only a matter of time before the second one was made available for sales & that particular day happens to be Yesterday, the first of March.

Now that we have seen at least 2 issues of the Tamil variant, here are the pros & cons of these 2 issues:

Strengths:

• Fantastic Independent Stories (Like the Ruskin Bond Story in 2nd Book)
• Established Stars such as Suppandi, Kalia, Shambu & Pyare Lal make it a sought after book
• The Packaging & designing of the issues are near perfect. Especially the printing, which is awesome
• The point that it is available in Major railway stations & popular book shops (Thanks to Higginbotham's)
• The price of INR 25/- is a steal when you consider that we have 80 fantabulous pages.
• The Translation was not a speed breaker, Thanks to the already established Translators of ACK Media

Weakness:

• The Tagline in the Cover design was laughable. Especially the the way the words were merely translated & thereby reviving the popular phrase “Junoon Tamil” which was used to mention the Google style robotic translation, without knowing what is what in Tamil. This can be done by an 8th standard student & we don’t require an editorial set up for this.
• It that was a joke, then the translation for “Special attraction” as சிறப்பு கவன ஈர்ப்பு was what? Am searching for words. And believe me, these where on the cover in both the issues. If the Editor has to be credited for the success, then in this case, the Editor has to be blamed for this faux pas.
• There was no mention about the periodicity about the issue. At no place it was mentioned that whether it was a monthly or quarterly of anything else.
• The Mail id & contact number in both books were, to say the least, a Joke. If Giving a Mumbai local number For a Tamil Magazine was a crime, then what can be said about giving the mail id in Tamil? (That was caused by the basic amateur error of Typing in English in a Tamil Keyboard).
• Lots of Spelling mistakes, Punctuation errors and other silly stuff through out the book.
• There was no info about the book anywhere. If there is any Marketing strategy involved, then it has to be somewhere in Mars or Moon or otherwise in Pakistan. Yours truly has not seen any promotional or information about the launch or availability of these books.
• The Same Index Format & Editorial page repeating in the second issue as well (Not to mention the mail id fiasco as well).
• Lack of awareness on the editorial front about the characters. All the Tinkle stars were already established in Tamil through the magician named VanduMama in 1984 itself. For the next 10 odd years, these characters were household names in the Tamil speaking homes. Consider the wonderful & aptly rhyming names of Tinkle stars:
• Kalia the Crow – Kakkai Kaali (காக்கை காளி)
• Tantri The Mantri – Thandhirakkaara Mandhiri (தந்திரக்கார மந்திரி)
• Shikari Shambu – Vettaikkara Vembu (வேட்டைக்கார வேம்பு)
• These names were much easier to follow and already established. A Mere Google search would have helped. However, consider the Grammatically flawed names chosen by the Publisher:
• Kalia The Crow – kaagam kaaliya (காகம் காலியா) in Tamil, the Name must always be காளி & Not காலியா, even if to name if fully, it must have been காளியா only and not as given.
• Tantri the Mantri – Thandhiri engira Mandhiri (Again an error prone naming). The actual meaning of the character inspired by Iznogoud is Mantri is a Tantri. However the meaning of the trranslated name is Tantri also known as Mantri.
• Shikari Shambu – Am tired. Shall we pass? Anyway, lets make it the last one. So here it goes. Shikari is not a Tamil word at all. When you have a wonderful word called வேட்டைக்காரன் in Tamil, why would you forcibly insert a word from Hindi lexicon?

Hoping that ACK Media & the editorial staff take a note from the above and make sure that the third issue has none of these amateurish errors. The ideal thing would be to appoint someone like N. Chockan or Athisha or someone like Kiruthika as the consultant and then go ahead. Remember, it is not a cell phone or any other product that you are selling here. It is a Tamil Magazine & it becomes a must to have a Tamilian in the Board and Not somebody who knows Tamil.

13 TCU Presents. . . 07: New Comics Intro ஜென் வெளிச்சம் - கண்ணதாசன் பதிப்பகம்

காமிரேட்ஸ்,
இந்த ஏழாம் அறிவு படம் வந்தவுடன் எல்லோரும் போதி தர்மரைப்பற்றி பேசிக்கொண்டு இருந்தது நினைவிருக்கலாம் (அதற்க்கு பிறகு தேனாண்டாள் ஃபில்ம்ஸ் ஒரு டப்பிங் படத்தை வேண்டுமென்றே போதி தர்மர் என்று பெயரிட்டு கல்லா கட்டியதும் நினைவிருக்கலாம்). அந்த போதி தர்மரைப்பற்றிய ஒரு முன் குறிப்போடு இந்த ஜென் வெளிச்சம் என்கிற சித்திர நாவல் துவங்குகிறது. அதற்காக இந்த புத்தக வெளியீட்டை பதிப்பகத்தாரின் ஒரு விளம்பர யுத்தி என்று எண்ணிவிட வேண்டாம். அந்த படம் வந்து இரண்டரை மாதங்களுக்கு பின்னரே இந்த புத்தகம் வெளியிடப்பட்டது.

இன்றைய தலைமுறையினர் பலருக்கும் ஜென் என்றால் என்னமோ அது ஒரு விதமான யோகா என்றே ஒரு நினைப்பிருக்கிறது. ஆனால் ஜென் என்பது என்ன? அதன் கோட்பாடுகள் என்ன என்பதைப்பற்றி பலருக்கும் உண்மையான புரிதல் இல்லை. இந்த குறையை போக்க பல புத்தகங்கள் இருந்தாலும், காமிக்ஸ் (சித்திரக்கதை) வடிவில் முதல் முறையாக ஜென் வெளிச்சம் என்று இந்த புத்தகம் கண்ணதாசன் பதிப்பகத்தில் இருந்து வந்துள்ளது.

ஜென் என்றால் என்னமோ பெரிய கம்ப சூத்திரம் என்று நினைத்து விட வேண்டாம். மிகவும் எளிமையான முறையில் ஒரு அழகான கதை(கள்) வடிவில் ஜென்னை பற்றி ஒரு பக்கத்தில் ஒரு கோட்பாடு / விளக்கம் என்று விளக்கியுள்ளார்கள். முதலில் ஒரு சாம்பிளுக்காக இதனை படியுங்கள், பின்னர் இந்த புத்தகத்தை பற்றி அலசலாம்.

வழக்கம் போல இன்னமும் ஏராளமான ஸ்கான்கள் இருந்தாலும்கூட அவற்றை எல்லாம் இங்கே வெளியிடப்போவதில்லை. மாறாக, இந்த புத்தகத்தை பற்றி சிறிது பேசுவோம் படிப்போம்.

 
ஜென் என்றாலே ஆறு கத தூரம் ஓடும் என் நண்பர் இரவுக் கழுகு போன்றவர்கள் கூட இந்த புத்தகத்தின் மீது ஆர்வம் கொண்டு வாங்கி பத்திக்கொண்டு (ஜென் வெளிச்சத்தில் பத்திக்கிச்சு என்று எழுதினால் கோபித்து கொள்கிறார்கள்) ஆகையால் படித்துக்கொண்டு இருக்கிறார்கள் என்றால் அது இந்த புத்தகத்தின் சித்திரத் தரத்திற்கும், மொழியாக்கத்திற்கும் கிடைத்த வெற்றியேயாகும் என்றால் மிகையன்று. இந்த புத்தகம் வெளியான போதே இதனைப்பற்றி நண்பர் அதிஷா என்னிடம் கூறியிருந்தார் (பின்னர் அவர் இதனைப்பற்றி புதிய தலைமுறை வார இதழில் எழுதி இருந்தார் என்பது வேறு கதை).

மிகவும் தெளிவான மொழி நடையில், ஆர்வத்தினை தூண்டும் சித்திரங்களுடன் அருமையான காகிதத் தரத்தில் வெளிவந்துள்ள இந்த புத்தகம், காமிக்ஸ் சாராத அணைத்து விதமான புத்தக ரசிகர்களும் ஒரு முறையேனும் படிக்க வேண்டிய ஒரு புத்தகம். இந்த புத்தகத்தில் இருக்கும் பல கதைகளை பற்றி சக வலைப்பதிவர் ஒருவரிடம் சொல்லிக்கொண்டு இருந்தேன். அவர் உடனடியாக இந்த புத்தகத்தை என்னிடம் இருந்து வாங்கிக்கொண்டார். அவர் என்ன சொன்னார் என்றால், ஜென் தத்துவங்களையும் மீறி, குழந்தைகளுக்கு சொல்ல அருமையான கதைகள் பல இருக்கிறது-ஆகவே எனக்கு இது வேண்டும் என்றார்.

சொன்னதோடில்லாமல் என்னிடமிருந்து அந்த புத்தகத்தையும் வாங்கிக்கொண்டு சென்றே விட்டார். நானும் வேறு வழியில்லாமல் இப்போது (நாளையோ, அதற்க்கு மறுநாளோ) மறுபடியும் இந்த புத்தகத்தை வாங்கவிருக்கிறேன். ஜென் கோட்பாடுகளை சித்திர வழியில் விளக்கும் புத்தகம்தானே என்று கருதிவிடாமல் இந்த புத்தகத்தினை ஒரு முறையேனும் படிக்க நண்பர்களுக்கு ஒரு அன்பு கோரிக்கை விடுக்கிறேன். இந்த புத்தகத்தை பற்றிய அதிக விவரங்களுக்கும், தமிழகத்தில் எங்கே இந்த புத்தகங்களை வாங்கலாம் எனபதிற்க்கும் கீழ்காணும் ஸ்கான் உபயோகமாயிருக்கும்.

நாவலைகுறித்து என்னுடைய கருத்துக்கள்: ஆரம்ப சில பக்கங்கள் ஏதோ வரலாற்று, ஆவண புத்தகம் படிப்பது போன்ற எண்ணத்தை உருவாக்கினாலும், அதற்க்கு பிறகு மிகவும் ரசிக்கத்தக்க வகையில் புத்தகத்தினை அமைத்திருக்கிறார்கள். இதற்காகவே இந்த புத்தக ஆசிரியரை பாராட்ட வேண்டும். அதிலும் குறிப்பாக ஓவியர். சமீபத்தில் இந்த அளவிற்கு என்னை ரசிக்க வைத்த புதிய ஓவியர் யாருமே இல்லை என்றே கூறலாம். ஒவ்வொரு சிறு கதையும், அதற்குண்டான கருத்துக்களும் அட்டகாசம். எனக்கு பிடித்த இரண்டு பக்கங்களை இங்கே பிரசுரித்துள்ளேன். இதனைப்போல நூற்றுக்கணக்கான பக்கங்கள் இருக்கின்றன. படித்து மகிழுங்கள்.

10 TCU Presents. . . 05: New Comics Intro - Pictures of melody-M.S.Subbulakshmi:Queen of Song-Graphic Novel Review

Welcome back to TCU. Since last week, TCU was eagerly waiting for a new Graphic Novel/Comics. Of late, TCU is introducing certain new Comics series which are going to be translated in Tamil Language in the near future. In this series, we are going to see a new kind of Comics from Chennai itself. Yes sir, we are talking about a new imprint from Chennai.

Necessity is the mother of all inventions is an old saying. Here in the present day, we can say that Necessity is the mother of a New Publication. Way is that? To know more, read on and complete this post on a wonderful initiative from a wonderful Lady.

Those who live in Chennai or Have an ear for music will be familiar with the Name Ms Lakshmi Devnath (Here is the link to her Website: http://lakshmidevnath.com/). She has written more than 200 articles and research features on Carnatic music in leading publications like The Hindu & Sruti (India’s premier magazine for the performing arts). For some time, she was working on a Biography on the legendary musician M.S.Subbulakshmi. She then decided to give it in a form that will be easy to read even for the kids, for they are the ones who have an avid interest in learning Carnatic music. Once she decided that the story will be told in Comics format, she tried for the publishers. However, when there was no push from any of the present set of publishers, she decided to take it on her own and launched her own publishing house “Heritage Publishing House”. The 1st ever book from this newly launched publishing house is the biography of M.S.Subbulakshmi titled as Queen of Song. Here are the cover images of the lovely book. If the cover images look stunning and familiar at the same time, it is because our beloved artist Aras has worked on the cover image and made so lovely. Of course the back ground images are from the book itself.

If the cover image was so stunning and eye capturing, the inner works by artist G.Sekar are also good. Here are the sample images from the 1st and last pages of the book. Kindly look at the 1st page last panel artwork. it is so stunning that you are tempted to say that MS is looking at you. At the same time, one must say that drawing and drawing for comics are two different things and here is where sekar found wanting. Of course, this is also where legendary artists of the calibre of Maniyam selvam have been found wanting. The inexperience in drawing comics is shown in other panels. One must say that, with experience of drawing many comics stories, Sekar will be a world class Comics/Graphic Novel artist.

Of Course, this book is not a work of accidental planning. It is the first amongst many. Here are certain other stories which are about to be launched very soon by the very same publishing house. In the last cover, we have the picture of Ms Lakshmi Devnath and her profile. It must be noted that this book comes with a Wonderful A4 Size photograph of M.S.Subbulakshmi and what more, it is signed by her as well. Of course, that scan is not included here and you need to buy this wonderful book to have a look into that signed photograph.

Book Review: When TCU read the articles about the book in leading news papers, the eagerness to buy these books was unmatched. Hence TCU visited certain bookshops and when found wanting on the info of the availability of the same, TCU has sent a mail to the author on the same. You wont believe, not only the wonderful lady made a personal call on the whereabouts of the book, she also made sure that TCU got the book very soon. TCU thanks the wonderful gesture from the renowned author.

12 TCU Presents . . . 04: New Comics Intro - Chennai Super Komics Volume 2: Chennai Super Kids

Welcome back to TCU. Surprised, eh? Yes, it was even surprising to me to get back to the good old days when Yours Truly started blogging with posts on alternative days was the norm. Gone are the days when TCU used to post more than 10 posts in a month. Now, it is a tad difficult to get even 5 Posts (With lots of news posts thrown in between). Review posts and Old book reviews and character indices are what TCU is interested in. Slowly but surely, within this year end TCU will try to complete the Character indices of major Comics stars in Tamil Comics History. Surely, we are going to burn the midnight oil a lot. Which in turn results in a lot of posts for the comirades.

Our 1st ever TCU Presents . . . was a run-away success with lots of hits (it is among TCU’s top 5 posts with maximum hits). Here is the volume 2 of the same series. The other entries in the TCU Presents . . . (Euro Books – Phantom Series & Indya Comics – Illustrated Classics) were also met with favourable reviews and response. Hence we are going to continue with the new comics intro series, but with only those which have a chance of being made available in Tamil language in the near future. In the press statement made during the book launch of the 1st issue of Chennai Super Komics, it was clearly stated that from next year onwards, these books will be available in Tamil language as well.

Chennai Super Komics Volume II - Chennai Super Kids: This particular book reached TCU on Saturday and since there were couple of posts waiting in the wings, we had to wait for more than 3/4 days to post this. Apologies for that and we shall try to make these posts without any delay in the future. Like the previous issue, this one was also a multi coloured A-4 Size book of 32 pages priced at INR 40/-. The packaging was neat as usual and to enthuse the children, there were lots of Note book labels inside the book as a gift. Here the the images (for the 1st time in online as a scanned image):

Story of Chennai Super Kids: The storyline and the presentation are better than the 1st issue and let us congratulate the team for that. TCU strongly advises that the story for children need not be childish. At the same time with a TG of 12 Years, you needn’t to bring your mature adventures either. This time, the creative team has tried to improve and that can be very easily felt in this book. If the 1st book was all about Paandi, this issue is about Manivannan. It was tragic that he couldn’t get into his school team (Chennai Dragons) and feeling the pain of rejection, he starts his own team with girls being equal players in the squad. And he receives a timely helping hand from a mysterious person who calls himself as Mr Flames and helps these kids to gain confidence as a team and prepare for the important match.
