Let Me Wish One And All a Happy May Day – Labour Day – International Workers Day. TCU is also proud on the fact that the 1st ever May Day in India was Celebrated in Chennai (Then Madras), The city in which Yours Truly Lives. ComiRade Doctor 7 is About to Post a Blog Post on Russian Books (Related with Carl Marx) and hence TCU is making this post on Carl Barks. For those who came in late, Carl Barks is the Creator of the Renowned Comics Character Uncle Scrooge about which TCU has done a News Post last time. Jokes Apart, Uncle Scrooge (And Carl Barks Also) is the Prime Example of How Hard work with Dedication can take you to the top and on this International Worker’s Day, we may look at them as role models.
Not many can recollect the fact that Uncle scrooge has made his debut in a Full Length Story in Tamil Language about 21 Years ago. Yes, 15th March 1988 was the day in which Tamil ComiRades had their taste of Uncle Scrooge in Quality Translation. However, ComiRades were made to wait for 2 years as the teaser advertisements of the same were started from 1986 itself in the form of Write ups and Associated trailers. The following are the official advertisements about the Introduction of the world famous Walt Disney Characters in Tamil.

Mini Lion 21 – Coming Soon Ad for Walt Disney Characters
However, the entry of Uncle scrooge was for a short stint only. He was limited to 5 Full stories Only in Mini Lion Comics (Now Off Press, From The Same Publisher of Lion Comics and Muthu Comics – Ms Prakash Publishers). The reasons could be anything, Lack of Success, Premium Copy Rights, etc. Here are the List of the Uncle Scrooge Stories that appeared in Mini Lion Comics and their respective English counterparts.

This is where Mr Vijayan distinguishes himself from the rest of the Comics Publishers / Editors.Even though Uncle Scrooge is a World Popular Character who has made his appearance in the Mid 60’s itself in India, he gives them a Proper Introduction to the New Readers which helps to Understand the Story in a much better way. In fact, he has done this to many of the Wonderful Characters he has introduced to Us through his publications.
Suskey and Wiskey springs to Memory, almost immediately. And So is Chick Bill & Co. This is a Wonderful way of taking readers forward and helping them to understand the relationship much better, without which many a ComiRade would Have thought that Agatha Aunty is Married.
Keep this introduction Part in Mind; Because when we are going to compare the standards of Mini Lion with another International Giant who made his entry into Tamil Language (Yes Sir, There was another Publisher also) with Uncle Scrooge Stories, You will understand the importance a Good Editor. We are, in a Way, Blessed to have Such good Editors.
Now, this introduction page was in the inner cover and was in Sub Prime Colour and hence to make the scanned pages visible to the ComiRades, TCU has done some colour correction and precisely that is the reason for the distorted look of the Scan. Apologies, As TCU is Just a Beginner when it comes to Photo Shop. Whatever, that is to be appreciated for the Scanning, All credits must go to Ayyampalayam Venki Sir and Doctor 7 who are the masters to TCU in terms of PhotoShop and Scanning. And, whatever there is to be pin pointed at, it should be on TCU for Not learning properly. Now, PhotoShop Classes and other things can be discussed later on.
Now, Enough of this and Let us get on with the 1st ever full length Story of Uncle Scrooge in Tamil Language. “Oru Naanayap Poraattam” is the title in Tamil and the Respective English Title is “For Old Dime’s Sake”. Even though both the titles are apt, one must give due credit to Mr Vijayan for using the Title as Naanayam in Tamil Language means a Coin (Dime) As well as Honesty. Every one of the Die Hard ComiRades will agree to the fact that a Title for a Comic Book is Important in making the book a Success. Mr Vijayan Scores over Here. Not to forget about the Cover design. Such a Lovely Design with Lamination was a Huge hit. This cover is also the one of the only two covers ever to adorn Uncle Scrooge ever in Mini Lion.
Story: Uncle Scrooge has a Lucky Dime and He believes that all his luck is because of the fact that the Dime is still with him. He also believes that Once he looses the dime, His luck will also desert him. His Arch Rival Magica De Spell wants to acquire that dime at any cost. This story is Her (Yet another) attempt to get that dime. She uses her Magical abilities and makes asteroids to attack Scrooge’s Safety Bin and Fails. During that attempt Scrooge gets a Ink mark in his back side of the head and leaves the Safety Bin to Meet the Mayor, Knowing that Magica has left the city through his Detectives. Magica Not only able to disguise Uncle Scrooge’s Detectives, But also Him as she takes over and becomes the Mayor. Under Her Spell, Uncle Scrooge discloses the Secret combination to open the Safety Bin and Magica takes over as Uncle Scrooge himself and goes to his bin and takes out the Lucky Dime. Suspicious Huey, Duey and Louey confirms that this is Not Uncle scrooge by the lack of Ink Mark in his Back side of the Head and get the Dime Back.
The 1st ever Uncle Scrooge Story was a Success. Hence the Next story followed immediately in the next issue itself. The next issue happens to be Summer Special (Yes, in the golden 80’s, Even Mini Lion had Summer Specials). This Time it was a Short Story Only and this too was in Double colour. And, The most important point to be noted over here is that the Double colouring is done locally and Hats Off to the Editorial team to Make sure that Tamil ComiRades get a Taste of World Class Comics (Working on a Shoe String Budget, though). Imagine, If only Mr Vijayan Had the Facilities and the Financial clout enjoyed by Other Publishers such as Indrajal, Egmont, Diamond etc, What Great heights he would have taken Tamil Comics to. The Key Words here are IF ONLY.
Story: Uncle Scrooge Wants to Know who is the most Famous person in Duckburk and is shocked to know that he is not in the Top ten as those places were occupied by Sports Celebrities. In an attempt to become one such, Uncle scrooge plays Rugby, Tennis, Golf and what Not. Finally he gets satisfied by the fact that on Friday’s he happens to be the Most Popular and Famous person as that is the day of Weekly Salary Distribution.

After the 1st 2 appearances, Uncle Scrooge disappeared from Mini Lion Comics for 16 months and came back with a Cover Appearance of his Own. Statistically, this was the last cover appearance of Uncle Scrooge in Mini Lion. During those 16 months, there was many a Ad proclaiming that the next issue will be Uncle Scrooge’s Andhasthai Thedi.
Story: Uncle Scrooge Has just made 10 Million Dollars profit in a Deal with a New Nation who paid him in Gold. Beagle Boys also get to know about this deal and they follow Uncle scrooge to get the Gold.Uncle Scrooge gets to Bantu with His usual Gang and Some Rats (Real Ones) and on the way Buy some corn as rat food, from which Uncle scrooge derives an Idea. He disguises the gold in the form of Corn and then makes it to the ship safely. However, they are captured by the Beagle Boys and they find out the Corn issue and take all of it,Leaving The Ship Empty. However, The Rats Bring back all the Gold thinking them as Corn and makes Uncle scrooge a Happy Man in the end. This is a Master piece of Vijayan and the Editor is at his best in moments like the Beagle Boys Song, which are still in memory for those who have read it.
Another thing that Strikes in this Story is how the incidents are used in Tamil Movies. Here, Uncle scrooge makes Donald to Cry on behalf of him as he is very tired himself. The same happened in a Tamil Movie in Which Ace Comedian Vadivelu enacts such scene. Inspiration? Well, Yes.
As with the trend, One Uncle Scrooge Story followed another. Yes, the next Mini Lion Featured Uncle Scrooge’s Mini Story titled Christmas Kanavugal. Look at the cover as this is one of a Kind in the history of Mini Lion. This Book had a Lucky Luke story who has become the No.1 Comedy Hero among the Tamil ComiRades.
Story: Uncle Scrooge is writing a Letter to Santa on all his Good Deeds throughout the year and Unfortunately he could not remember any. To refresh his memory, he takes a walk, goes for a ride, meets the Doctor etc without any fruitful result. However, in all his walks, he is doing one good or another to the people who come across him. DisHearted by the fact that he has not done anything good of note, Uncle Scrooge Goes to Bed only to Meet Santa Who Wishes Him Merry Christmas.

The Next (Eventually Last) Uncle Scrooge story to appear was Andhasthai Thedi (In Search of Status or The Status Seeker, which is the English Title), which was much advertised over the years. And when finally it hit the stands, ComiRades vouched that the wait was worth it. As per the Trend, Uncle scrooge was not in the Cover and Lucky Luke was the 1st Story in the book apart from adorning the Cover.
Story: Uncle Scrooge finds out why is he Not invited to Parties – He does not have a Status Symbol. So he goes out to get the No 1 Status Symbol (Which he traded with, many years ago) The Candy-Striped Ruby. He is closely followed by De Waldo and Beagle Boys. How He gets the Ruby forms the rest of the Wonderful story. Shades of All At sea and in many places, references were also made to that story.
Now, Apart from Indrajal (Yes, Indrajal Comics), Chanda Mama, Disney Today and Egmont, Uncle Scrooge made his appearance in English in Gold Spot Comics As well. TCU is Taking only one particular issue of Gold Spot as it featured the Status Seeker Story for comparative analysis. Even though the colouring was much denser, there is another fact that need to be COVERED. Yes, Somehow the other, sleeveless was not considered appropriate during those days and hence the lady in the 1st panel was clothed fully. Mini Lion remained loyal to the original.

Now, these are some of the Advertisements of the coming soon issues of Uncle Scrooge and Now in Stands ads.The Muthu Comics Ad featuring Buster (Son of Andy cap) started a Research which may take Yours truly to the end of All the Fleetway Publications. More on that Later.

Apart from appearing in Full length stories, Uncle scrooge has made only one appearance in a 3 Page story in Mini Lion. However, Donald Duck has appeared in couple of 1 page stories. Here are they:
|Mini Lion Issue 19 – Raja Rani Jackie – 3 Page Story–1st Page|| |

Mini Lion Issue 29– Bayangara Palam– 1 Page Story – Front Inner Cover – Colour Printing
Lion Comics Issue No 30 – Oct 1986 – Yar andha Mini Archie? – 1 Page Story Donald Duck
Another Walt Disney Character, Scamp has made 5 Appearances in Mini Lion and since it will take much space to Upload all the 11 pages, Here are 3 Scans:
Mini Lion Issue 17– Vellai Pisasu – Scamp – 1 Page Story
Mini Lion 10–Kalla Parundhin Kadhai–Scamp–2 Page Story
Mini Lion 14–Summer Special–Scamp–5 Page Story
When we talk about fillers such as Scamp, Donald Duck etc, we have to look back the very first appearance of a Walt Disney character in Tamil Comics and My Limited Sources Dates back to 35 years when Mickey Mouse made a 2 Page Short story appearance in Muthu Mini Comics. For those who came in Late, Muthu Mini Comics is a Mini Series Comprising of 8 Books Only and Our Muthu Fan had done a Blog post on that with coverage of 7 Issues (He is yet to acquire the 8th one, i believe). TCU is lucky in a way, as The 8th Book also is with TCU making it a Complete Set. And TCU believes that the 8th Book featuring Phantom (The 1st Phantom’s Story - முதல் வேதாளனின் கதை) is a very rare commodity in Comics Collectibles.

Now, As mentioned above, There was another Player who entered the Tamil Comics Domain with Uncle Scrooge’s Stories. Yes, We are Talking about Egmont Publications who as a JV Partner with Indian Express Publications entered into Tamil Comics arena as well. The size was similar to that of Mini Lion and the Price was INR 10.00 and the Book consisted of 32 pages in Full Colour with papers being of the very good quality. Here are the Complete Coverage of the 1st ever issue of the Same:
After seeing all those scans if you that that this would have a Big Success in Tamil, You Have to change your Opinion. The Translation, and Tamil Words Usage were Pathetic, to say the least. If ComiRades criticise Indrajal Comics and Vidyarthi Mithran Comics for it’s Translation, Kindly change your opinion as this one takes the No 1 Position among all the Comics books which were translated Poorly to Tamil. TCU has given only 4 Examples and there are more than what you can actually count. Spelling Mistakes, Silly Translation, Missing of Exclamation marks-Question Marks-Comma’s-Full Stops-etc etc the list is endless. No Wonder, The Tamil Edition waned much earlier than anticipated.
|1st Page – 1st Panel: Zoo=Soo (ஜூ=சூ)||Flight = Plate, Scrooge = Skurooch||Jumbled Dialogues, Repeating Error||Inventors = In Lentors and Many More|
The other day TCU Had an Opportunity to discuss with a Comics Publisher who was in the Field for more than 40 Years and Now closed shop as for as Comics is Concerned, even though he is undisputed market leader in his publishing domain even now. He Said that, He too had to over come such a Incident in which they published a Book full of such errors and the Proof Reader went for a Toss after the discovery. You Know what My friend Did? Any guesses?
Well, being a Smart Business man, he made it a contest to find out the number of errors in the book and this announcement was made in the back wrapper. For the time being, let the publisher and Book be anonymous. One thing that can be said about the book is that it featured full length comics as well. And the competition was a Success, to say the least. Well, This is the best example of turning a Negative thing into Positive by using Commonsense.
Speaking of Books with Error filled Print, Another funny incident that props up to My Mind is about the Editor of India’s Highest selling Tamil Monthly Novel. There was an incident which made him to buy his first wrist watch in his life.
The Incident happened way back when Mr G.A was working in a Publication and they were on the verge of Publishing a Book on Urdu. When the Printing got over and the Books reached the Publisher, There was a Dynamite waiting to explode. Yes, A Dot and a Line got joined while printing turning the word to a UnParliamentary one, to say the least. As it was a Festival Season most of the Workers have already left for their Home towns and Only Our Young G.A was with the Publisher and there were more than a Thousand Book. The Publisher offered Him a Opportunity to clean up all the printing errors by removing the Dot and Line using a Blade and physically scratching all of them. Almost 2 Days of Scratching left his hands in Unbearable pain, But with the first ever Wrist watch of his own. Such Hard work and dedication took him to greater heights and even now He is a Simple man. More on Him and his Association with Prakash Publications Another Comics Mini Series Later. Yes, Prakash Publishers were involved in Many a Mini Series Just Like Muthu Comics Vara Malar (MVM), Muthu Mini Comics (MMC) etc.
Well, these are the two wonderful Comic creators who were responsible for Uncle Scrooge stories that we have discussed so far.

Carl Barks: Born As a Younger Child to William and Arminta, Carl Had a Tough Life as a Youngster which involved him moving over to three different places before he was 12, Unable to Complete Graduation because of His hearing Problems,Losing Mother at a Early age, Having to work in order to win bread for his family as his father had Nervous Break down etc etc.
The formative Years of Carl’s work involved him from moving from one job to another such as Farmer, Wood cutter, Turner, Mule Driver, Cowboy, printer etc without much success and this can be seen in His Character Donald. Finally, he decided to try his hands in Art and even had 4 lessons on Drawing through correspondence. Later On He moved to California to find job as a comics artist. Unsuccessful in that, he came back and tried to be a Farmer again and Then worked with a Canadian Magazine named as The Calgary Eye Opener drawing Cartoons featuring sexually and racially discriminating jokes. In Nov 1935, he joined Walt Disney as a “InBetweener” for a Salary of 20 Dollars, a far cry from the 90 dollars he was getting earlier. He was noted for providing Comical Situations and Ideas and hence was promoted to Story department in 1937. And he worked with Donald Duck Character also. Just Before Leaving Walt Disney in 1942 for the war time working situation and also for his own sinus problem getting accentuated with air-conditioning in Disney Studio, Carl produced his Own 64 page Story Donald Duck Finds Pirate Gold (Dell Four Colour Issue No 9).
April 1943 was a Land mark month for Carl as he produced his first ever 10 Page Story on Donald Duck with all Credits (Script, Artwork, pencil, inking, solid blacks and lettering). That Started a Successful partnership with Dell / Western Publishing and improved with the creation of Uncle Scrooge Character (1947 – Christmas on Bear Mountain) and a Host of other supporting characters till 1966, when he retired. Later on he involved with Stories and Oil Paintings, which he had to stop for Rights issues. However, in 1981 Star Wars Producer Gary Kurtz persuaded Walt Disney to allow Carl to use Uncle Scrooge Character and What an Issue it turned out to be.
After Being turned down by the Major Publishers, Kurtz & Summer published the book through Celestial Publications (Which Kurtz acquired for this purpose). And it was an instant hit and even today it features in the collection wish list of Many a ComiRade. It is also the 1st ever Book to be reviewed by Time Magazine.
Barks' Donald Duck stories were rated #7 on Comic's Journal list of 100 top comics; his Uncle Scrooge stories were rated #20.
Carl Barks has an asteroid named after him, 2730 Barks. A Cornell scientist was inspired by Barks' tale "Island in the Sky".
In the city of Almere, The Netherlands, close to Amsterdam, a street was named after him: Carl Barksweg.
Barks Style Of Art
|Bradbury Style Of Art||De Lara Style Of Art||Moores Style Of Art||Murray Style Of Art||Taliaferro Style Of Art||Strobl Style Of Art|
Tony Strobl: An art student of Cleveland School of Art (His classmates were Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, who actually got some help from Strobl in creating Superman) Strobl was impressed after watching the Walt Disney film Snow White and eventually joined Walt Disney studio. After participating in the War, He came back and relocated to the Comics Division and thereby started a Career with Western Publishing in 1947 and became (Probably) the artist who has drawn the most Disney comics pages ever.
In the 50’s, Strobl was the Main artist for Disney’s Stories and in the 60’s started to work with Outside US Publications as well. Strobl worked with Disney till 1987, in between creating a Daily strip of Donald Duck and also a Sunday Strip. From the Above Example, we can derive that Strobl’s works were easily recognizable for his simple and clear art style.
There were many similarities between Carl and Strobl as their 1st Job in Disney was as a “In Betweener” and both of them worked with Bugs Bunny and we can go on listing them. At One point of time, Jerry Siegel planned to end his association with Joe in creating Superman and approached Tony, who eventually refused it.
