12 Memorabilia 1: Lion Comics - Dice Game

Dear ComiRades,

There are many Comics Memorabilia that we would have collected. The Lion Comics Key Chain, The Prakash Publishers T-Shirt, Lion Comics Comics Album, Rani Comics Note Book Labels, Prakash Publishers Seasons Greetings etc. However, the one that am going to Show is quite different from the rest of the ones that i have mentioned over.

Am talking about the Dice Game (தாய விளையாட்டு) that was given with the 50th Special issue of Lion Comics (Dragon Nagaram). Have a Look at the Cover Scan of the 50th issue & the 1st page where the miniature version of the game is shown. Unlike Many ComiRades, I was not living in Chennai, Tamil Nadu at the time this Issue got released. Hence, the only contact for me with this dice game was that picture showing the game in the 1st page of the book. Have a look at the month of Publication & you will realise that our previous post on James Bond Comics issue no.1 was also released at the same time. What a Co-Incidence.

I sincerely believe that there will be many ComiRades who will be in the same position as of yours truly. Hence I just wanted to start this section where the comics memorabilia will be updated for those who came in late. So, Have a close look at this very rare Dice game. If anyone who has this dice game, Take a Snap / Scan of the same and mail it to tamilcomicsulagam@gmail.com and who knows, you may end up getting a surprise gift from the TCU Team. (Well, TCU stands for Tamil Comics Ulagam, of Course).

Here comes the Surprise element of the post. The Dice game has a origin. The Scream Magazine Has given the same with their 1986 Holiday special. Here is the scan of the same.

Now, Now. Hasn't this post turned to be different? If so, all credit goes to My Partner in crime Dr.Sathish who reminded of this timely so that we can start a new section on comics memorabilia.

Hope you liked this new section. Based on the comments and suggestions, we can start new sections like this in our Blog. All you need to do is, hit the comments section and pen your thoughts on this.

Many a ComiRade may question that our next ComiPost is advertised as James Bond issue no 2 & we are uploading this as a sudden thought. Not truly, sir. Our series still continues with the second issue of James Bond comics issue no.2 as the next post. Wait for that.

Well, That's all for the time being. Thanks for all your support on keeping this blog alive and don't forget to add your views in Comments section.

Thanks & Regards,
King Viswa.

  2. What a post, rekindling the memories of the golden past. I still remember seeing the 50th edition on stands, with the Dice Game Advertisement on the cover. But Rs.5, at age of 9, was a little too much for my pocket, which used to receive only Rs.5/- per week as Pocket Money for all the fantasies :). Later, when I was scouting like a treasure hunter in Old comic shops, I was able to obtain this edition, but the Dice Game was never to be found anywhere.

I still remember those Rani Comics Labels which they used to give every year after the summer holidays. I used to flaunt them at Schools on my notebooks, with everyone checking out where it is from, etc. What a wonderful memories, thanks for rekindling them Viswa. By the way, who has the Original English & Lion Comics Tamil edition between yourself and Sathish. It's a great one for your collection, unfortunately a missing piece in mine.

    Dear Rafiq,

Same Blood! I too had missed many Special Issues when they were available in shops due to budget constrains.

My pocket money was always NIL & I used to persuade my late Maternal Grandfather to buy me comics when I used to go to Erode during vacations.

Since I was allowed to buy only one book, I always chose to buy reprints of Irumbukkai Mayavi in Muthu. He was my favorite, as you can see from my photo.

The rest (Lion, Mini Lion, Thihil) I used to borrow them from a friend in exchange. But the Dice Game somehow made it into my collection when I started collecting seriously 12 years ago. I actually acquired the 50th issue only recently.

Unfortunately neither Viswa nor I happen to have the English edition. Actually I downloaded it from here.

Sathish, thanks for the link. i never thought that vijayan sir will copy like this. Anyway, this cannot be called as copying. as he is giving the tamil version to us just like the stories that he is presenting us for over 30 years.

  6. Dear Arun,

Thanks for mailing your query. Today i was in Pondy & just now returned. We purchased a Very recent Lion Comics Vengai Vettai (It must be my 5th or 6th copy of this book). on seeing the Advertisement for Tex Willer's Kanawai Kollayar, Dr Sathish, Venkateshwaran and Yours truly were discussing about the books which were advertised and not published yet. What a co-incidence.

Amazing. Isn't it. By the way, just wait for some time as am working on this special post with the advertisements of the books you have mentioned and possible reasons for not appearing & Reasons for the delay from the Man Himself, S.Viajayan.

Hey, By the way, Let me tell this to you for a fact that, Detective Jerome's Book that was advertised will not be published in Tamil. May be another story from Detective Jerome; But not the story advertised. Will explain the reasons put forward by M/s Prakash Publishers in the detailed post on this topic.
