Note: Actually, We are Not the Only people who are doing it. Across the World People are doing So. The Pioneers in this, are the well Known Fleetway / IPC Media who went to Such an Extent that They emulated the cover of their own magazine to another one of their special editions six years later. More Info on that can be Read from THIS blog Post by TCU’s Friend Steve Holland.

  4. viswa,

nice work. it would have taken ages for me to find out the cover inspiration for all these titles.

yes, what you said is correct. this is no way copying. in fact, as i was planning for my next post, i came across INDIAN BOOK HOUSE's STAR COMICS which published JAMES BOND 007 in colour in indrajal size in the late 80's. you must be knowing that the re-draw all the panels and images as they didn't get the proper agreement going.

compared to that, this is one lakh times better.

all the very best. eagerly waiting for spider post. what happened to mr marmam? (or is Mr marmam is part of king of crooks post?).

    thanks.

    உங்களின் பதிவை இன்று தான் பார்க்க நேரிட்டது. புலா சுலாகி சொல்வதைப் போல எடுத்துக் கொண்டு உள்ளீர்கள். ஒன்றே ஒன்றுதான் சொல்வேன்: This too will Pass Away.

    இருந்தாலும் அவரது கேள்வி பதில் பகுதியை நான் ஒரு கர்வத்தின் வெளிப்பாடாகவே கருதுகிறேன். அது ஒரு கலைஞனின் இயல்பு என்பது என்னுடைய தாழ்மையான கருத்து.

    //அவர் ஆர்வமற்று இயங்குவதைப் போன்ற ஒர் பிம்பத்தை எனக்கு அளிக்கிறது// நான் கேள்விப் பட்ட வரையில் இது உண்மைதான் என்றே நம்புகிறேன். ஆனாலும் ஒரு பதில் சிறந்து விளங்க கேள்வியும் நன்றாக இருக்க வேண்டும். ஒரு நல்ல வில்லன் இருந்தால் மட்டுமே கதாநாயகனின் மதிப்பை உணர முடியும்.

  14. From The Desk Of Rebel Ravi:

    Viswa,

excellent post on the cover comparison. eventhouh some might call this as copying, am with muthufan in saying that this is a nice way of promoting.

even last month, there was a Rajini film got released and the posters were all carrying images of Sultan and kuselan. when i checked in the film was a 1991 hindi film which got dubbed now and got released in tamil to cash on the popularity of rajini kanth's upcoming Sultan the wariior.

so, when the biggest money earners themselves indulging in such activty, what is wrong in doing so in an industry in which break even is also a dream come true and nly with service motto, you can continue.

likewise, when the 2nd part of predator got released in 1991-91 in tamil nadu, they cashed in on the popularity of Arnold (who starred in the 1st part) and most of the posters were carrying, "Anru Arnold, Inru - Neengal?" kind of promo.

    முத்து விசிறி கோடு போட்டார் என்றால் நீங்கள் ரோடு போட்டு விட்டீர்கள். நமது காமிஸ் அட்டைகளின் மூலங்களை ஒரு சேர பார்த்தபோது புருவம் உயர்ந்தது. அரிய சேகரிப்பு!தலைப்பை போலவே (குறை) சொல்வதற்கு ஒன்றுமில்லை! குறையொன்றுமில்லை மறைமூர்த்தி கண்ணா... என்று பாடத்தோன்றுகிறது.

    //பழி வாங்கும் புகைப்படம், கதை சொல்லும் கொலைகள், மஞ்சள் பூ மர்மம், நொருங்கிய நாணல் மர்மம், த்ரில் ஸ்பெஷல், ஒர் திகில் திருமணம் போன்ற தமிழ்க் காமிக்ஸ்களின் அட்டைப் படங்கள் ஒரிஜனல்களை விட சிறப்பாக உள்ளன.// என்ற நணபர் ஷங்கர்விஸ்வலிங்கத்தின் கருத்தை நான் ஆமோதிக்கிறேன். இன்னும் கூறப்போனால் ஈ அடித்தான் காப்பியாக இல்லாமல் ஒரிஜினல் படங்களை மாடலாக கொண்டு
    கதைக்கேற்ற வகையில் சிறுசிறு மாற்றங்களை செய்துள்ளார்கள்.

    வேரை பார்க்க நினைத்தால் பூக்களை ரசிக்க முடியாது என்பார்கள். அது சரிதான் என்று தோன்றுகிறது. அருமையான பதிவுக்கு பாராட்டுக்கள்!

  21. Dewaram - Blogger - George Custor = Let me Clarify that Mr Editor will be the 1st person to appreciate this Post, Knowing Him personally i can vouch for that. In No way this post or the Author has imagined to bring an iota of Bad image towards them.

First of all, The Editor Has copyrights for not only the Stories, but also the covers as well. Hence he can use them in whichever way appropriate for the promotion of the Character, rather than the book itself. He can design the Cover of the book on his own and not going for the direct covers of the respective books in certain cases.

Apart from that, Let me take one cover as an example and explain the background details: The Cover of Thigil Theevu for which the inspiration is Bob Morane. Before this Cover, in majority of the Adventures featuring Modesty and Garvin will have Modesty hogging the Cover Limelight. There were letters written by the Edior by the ComiRades requesting for Garvin to be featured in the Cover.

Here is the tricky part: You must be knowing that Modesty Blaise Stories are Daily strips and hence they do not have any cover feature. Here the editor has to use his Imagination to carve a cover design out of nothing (Practically nothing). Hence, it is all the more tricky to design a cover for such stories. What will the Poor editor do? He has to have a source for that.

AND the source has to be relevant to the story line and character features. So, in this particular case, he designed the cover in such a way that he satisfied the requests of the ComiRades and also made a Cover out of nothing. Can we find fault at that? No, We can only Marvel at his mastery over the Domain of Comics publication and how he understood the pulse of the ComiRades. No Offence Meant on having this post. Instead, this post can be used on How Visionary our Editor is.

Personally, TCU Has met the 2 Cover Designing Local Artists and the Lay-Out and interior Change-Edit artist Mr Kannan (Never had the Opportunity to meet the Original Muthu Comics Artist, who designed the formative issues of Lion Comics). The background details and information on them will be in No Comments 2 Which will have some of the covers of first 10 issues of Rani Comics.

  23. Dear Anony = Thanks for Comment. You have to understand one fact. Out of the 24 Covers that featured over here, 10 covers feature stories of Daily Strips (And hence no original cover to look out for inspiration),6 covers are of RePrints (And hence the original cover is already used.

This post is aimed at showing the Genius of our Beloved Editor and kindly read the Disclaimer, the previous comment and bear in Mind that TCU Knows what it takes to Publish Tamil Comics and the pains of going through it. Instead of Looking it at the way you say, Look in My POV and Salute the Mastery of our editor.

  28. If you see many of Tamil famous novels are using cover pages from Internet which is completely irrelevant to the story. So that they are saving much money where developing a unique cover page will cost a considerable amount.
I strongly believe that if Lion's business is better they will provide super cover pages on their own. Let us wish them to achieve such a big business in near future.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Ramesh: Eventhough i Agree with Your POV, i Do think that The Words கலை திருட்டு were a little Harsh on the Publisher. Thanks for the Comment though.

Siv: You are correct. Till KV Anand arrived in the Scene, Most of the Tamil Monthly Novels either had Foreign Novel/Movie Scene as the Cover or Some Artist doing a Touch Up on the other Photo's.

KV Anand is the One who has actually started the trend and Mr Ramu has to be appreciated for encouraging a Talent like K.V Anand. The trio (Or Should i say Foursome) of Ramu, K.V Anand, and SuBa was such a terrific combination in the 80's.

TCU Has a Big collection of all these Novels such as Super Novel (SuBa), Unga Junior (SuBa & PKP),Crime Novel (Rajesh Kumar), A Novel Time (PKP) Etc etc. Sometime in the future we will discuss the evolution of these.

Prince: Thanks for the comment. What, your programme time is going to change or what?
